Liberty. Opportunity. Pride. Yes We Can.

I am so proud to be an American today. To be a part of history in the making is such a powerful experience. Whether or not you support President Elect Barack Obama's party or believe in his politics, you cannot deny that this day marks a special moment for us as a nation. A day that we as a people have moved forward together.

I was moved to tears last night listening to the celebration and jubilation of so many people in this country who were finally feeling the power of having their vote counted. I think the stories that hit home the closest for me were those that African American adults told of their childhood's. They explained how their parents had tried to instill in them the belief that they could do whatever they put their minds to and become whatever they could dream for themselves.  As children they were skeptical, even cynical, because they knew in their heart of hearts that many doors remained closed. But today every child, no matter what the color of his skin can say, I too can live the dream. I can work hard and I too can someday be a leader. There is so much excitement and joy in this country right now.

Still, we have much work to do.

Hopefully, within my lifetime, I can give the same message to my daughter. Work hard and you too can be a leader.  Work hard and someday, you too can become president of the United States.

And, unfortunately, as we speak, rights are being taken away from individuals based on their sexual orientation. Legislation was passed in California and Arizona among other states, banning gay marriage. Hopefully, one day I will be able to tell my children that equal rights are offered to ALL US citizens.

But I am hopeful. Nothing can take away the pride I feel at this moment to be a citizen of the United States. I am inspired to be a part of the present and future, to make this country everything we hope it can be, a land of liberty and opportunity. Yes We Can.
